EMT-Paramedic

This 1,197-hour course follows the new Department of Transportation (DOT) Paramedic curriculum outline.  The EMT-Paramedic course provides extensive training that significantly increases knowledge and mastery of basic skills and covers a wide range of advanced life support skills.  These skills include the following: electrocardiogram monitoring and interpretation of cardiac rhythms, advanced cardiac life support protocols, manual defibrillation and external cardiac pacing, orotracheal and nasotracheal intubation, needle cricothyroidotomy, needle decompression for tension pneumothorax, IV therapy, advanced pharmacology methods including drug calculations and medication administration.

The student will receive certification in ACLS, PEPP, GEMS and PHTLS.  The student will also be required to complete clinical rotations in all areas of the hospital and other designated clinical sites as well as on the ambulance.  Students will be under the supervision of hospital and field staff.  Once the competency requirements are met both clinically and didactically, the student will be eligible to take the National Registry exam.

PREREQUISITE

Current EMT-B license, current/proof of vaccinations, felony free criminal history, a valid drivers license; minimum of 150 hour pre-hospital experience;    Acceptable  ACT, SAT or Compass scores in reading and math. Necessary pre-hospital hours can be scheduled with MMR.

LOCATIONS

EMT-Paramedic classes are offered in Saginaw and Mt. Pleasant.

SCHEDULE

The Saginaw and Mid-Michigan Community College Paramedic Program is a five-semester program beginning in August. Classes are Monday and Wednesday 9:00 a.m. -4:30 p.m. in the first semester. When clinical rotations start the Wednesday classroom day is replaced with a clinical day.
