Tips for Finding the Right EMT Programs in Michigan

Becoming an Emergency Medical Technician allows you to pursue a wide variety of careers. From working as a firefighter, paramedic, or emergency dispatcher, an EMT certificate can combine career opportunities with the satisfaction of helping others.

But finding the right EMT course can be challenging. To help you find EMT programs in Michigan that are right for you, Mobile Medical Response has created this guide.

First, Consider Your Goals

Out of the careers you can pursue with an EMT, which ones are you most considering? Will you need additional training after completing an EMT course? It’s also helpful to consider what type of clinical and work experience you might need for a certain role.

After you have a clear idea of what you’d like to do, you can determine what specialized training you will need to be qualified, and then choose an EMT program that includes this kind of training in its curriculum.

To give you an idea of what you can expect to find in EMT programs, here’s just some of what you can learn from Mobile Medical Response’s EMT Program:

  • Basic life support
  • CPR
  • Administration of medications like albuterol, epinephrine, nitroglycerin
  • Assessment of Lung Sounds
  • Checking for respiratory rate

Research Programs

After you have a better understanding of the type of training you will need for your chosen career, it’s time to begin researching EMT programs.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with the state-recognized EMT training institutions in your area. You want to make sure that the training you’re receiving is accredited and comes from authorized course providers.

In addition, reach out to an institute to learn more about their course schedules. How often do they offer their program? A good number of EMT programs will only run once or twice a year, so you’ll want to ensure you’re preparing yourself for when the enrollment window is open.

Also, find out if the program offers hybrid options for attending. These can be convenient options for busy schedules when it’s more difficult to attend in-person classes. Of course, you’ll want to learn when classes are actually held. Will you be able to attend during the evenings if you have work obligations?

You may also want to learn about a program’s acceptance rate, and how many students are typically enrolled in a program at one time. If you learn more effectively in smaller class sizes, you’ll want to find a program that can accommodate.

Additionally, consider the program’s duration, and be sure you meet the requirements for applying. While some programs may only last for a few weeks, certain programs run for several months. And, to be certified as an EMT, you’ll need to meet the minimum age requirements, be able to pass a background check, as well as complete a drug screening. Most programs also require a high school diploma, a GED, or an equivalent.

Be sure you also understand the program fees and if scholarship or payment plan options are available. At MMR, we offer two different payment options for your program fee and offer scholarship opportunities prospective students can apply for.

Review the Program’s Curriculum

While this is an important step when determining your goals and career path, it’s helpful to review the program curriculum in depth so you can be sure that your educational needs are met. Oftentimes, practical training is needed to succeed in an EMT program, so try to find out if the program offers immersive, hands-on scenario training.
