MMR Expansion to Lansing Market
The red and white ambulances of Mobile Medical Response will soon be visible in the Lansing area. MMR was recently selected to provide medical transportation services to Sparrow Hospital and its affiliate health care facilities. Service to Sparrow is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2014.
In the late spring MMR responded to a request for proposal from Sparrow Hospital who was seeking to better meet the needs of the mid-Michigan community and improve quality service and care for their patients. MMR was notified in mid-September that they were unanimously selected by the leadership at Sparrow Hospital. Privileges to operate in the Tri County Emergency Medical Control Authority (Ingham, Clinton, Eaton) have been granted and we expect to receive the official license to operate from the State of Michigan shortly.
The new service area will create at least 30 new full and part-time positions. MMR will provide basic, advanced and critical care transportation as well as wheelchair van services for patients being transferred to and from Sparrow facilities in Lansing, Ionia, St. Johns and Carson City. MMR will also invest in six new ambulances and two wheelchair vans to accommodate the approximate 6,000 annual transports the Sparrow contract will generate. A new MMR ambulance base will be located near Sparrow’s Lansing Campus. Recruitment for employment opportunities will begin immediately.
MMR provides service to ten other counties in mid- and northern Michigan and is the largest EMS provider in the State in terms of geography and square miles. With the Lansing market expansion, MMR’s workforce will grow to exceed 525 employees. MMR is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Ambulance Services and the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch.
“We spent months choosing a partner in consultation with Physicians, Emergency Services Caregivers, community members, and affiliates, soliciting proposals from companies throughout mid-Michigan before selecting MMR,” said Linda Reetz, R.N., B.S.N., M.B.A., NE/C, Administrative Director of Sparrow Emergency Services. “MMR is committed to Patient excellence as it centers on quality, safety, and service. It has demonstrated a true culture fit to Sparrow.”
“Being selected to provide service to Sparrow Health System affirms the unrivaled access to care we provide at MMR. I am proud of the work we do and believe it to be an honor to represent our great organization in this new Lansing-based market”, said MMR President, Mark Thompson.
Sparrow Hospital is an 800 bed regional teaching hospital with a 69 bed Emergency Department. System wide, Sparrow employs nearly 7,500 associates. Sparrow affiliate hospitals include Sparrow St. Lawrence in Lansing, Sparrow Ionia Hospital in Ionia, Sparrow Clinton Hospital in St. Johns and Carson City Hospital located in Montcalm County. The leadership at Sparrow indicated the reasons MMR was selected were the similar alignment of mission, vision and values, the dual accreditations, focus on patient and customer satisfaction, and clinical excellence. MMR leadership will spend the next several months working collaboratively with the leadership at Sparrow to create staffing and deployment models and customer service plans that will best serve the needs of the Sparrow and their affiliate hospitals.
